Money is a sophisticated subject because some people save it, others spend it wisely, and then there are those who end up wasting it. In this collection, we have found a series of short stories about people who lost their money in unpredicted and surprising ways.
Story 1:
A guy I worked with had a long-distance relationship with this girl heโd yet to meet in person. Then, suddenly, she told him she could fly out and meet him in a month. At the time, he lived in the basement of his folksโ placeโnot something he had disclosed earlier in their chats. In a panic, he got a new apartment.
Then he went to one of those furniture rental places and rented an entire apartmentโs worth of furniture: a couch, tables, a dining set, a bedroom suite, a TV, etc. The whole apartment was filled with rental furniture, which, if you donโt know, gets expensive really quickly. So after all this, the girl finally showed up. They went to his apartment, and thatโs when she told him that they should break up.
She didnโt want to do it over text and without meeting him at least once. She thought it wouldnโt be fair to him. She stayed one night and got on the plane the next day. Apparently, her stop in our city was just an extended layover as she was heading to Europe to tour with friends. She slept in the rental bed, and he slept on the rental couch. The next day, he drove her to the airport in his rental car. I donโt know how many thousands he dropped for that one breakup date, but manโฆ what a waste.
Story 2:I decided to fulfill a childhood dream and install a single-lane bowling alley in my basement for $50,000. It sounded like the perfect way to host parties and keep myself entertained. But after the novelty wore off, I realized no one wanted to bowl more than a game or two.
Now Iย just have anย incredibly noisy, space-hogging reminder ofย myย poor impulse control. Iย couldโve gone onย 20ย amazing vacations with that money instead ofย sitting alone inย myย basement, throwing gutter balls.
Story 3:
Story 4:ย
Iย wasted myย money onย aย โfree trialโ ofย aย muscle-building supplement. Iย was inย myย first year ofย college and decidedย I wanted toย get inย better shape but didnโt know where toย start. Iย clicked anย adย saying itย could help build muscle fast, got myย free bottle inย the mail, and started seeing aย bunch ofย weird charges onย myย card. They didnโt charge for that first bottle, but they charged aย subscription fee.
Iย immediately called the bank toย have myย card blocked, but byย that time, Iย was out something like $100 thatย I couldnโt afford asย aย student. Iย kept getting spam calls too and had toย tell the rep very firmly thatย I wanted toย beย unsubscribed.
Story 5:ย When Iย was aย recent graduate, Iย was scammed byย anย insurance company. Iย was just soย happy toย beย hired byย anyone thatย I was duped into thinkingย I could make money byย selling people insurance they didnโt want orย need.
Iย paid $350 for aย textbook for anย exam toย become certified. Although Iย passed the exam, Iย realized within aย week that the company was aย scamโcomplete with aย ridiculous script that, ifย weย went offย it, weย would get inย troubleโand cold calling.
Worst. Mistake. Ever.
Story 7:ย Iย once got locked out ofย myย car one night. Iย called the first name onย the Google search. Iย was given aย quote ofย $60, soย Iย agreed. The โlocksmithโ only used aย slim jim toย open myย door, andย I was charged $130. Iย had noย choice but toย pay and walk away very sad.
Story 8:
Inย times ofย need, Iย had toย sell aย very expensive camera (around $900) that Iโd bought with myย very first salary and that was really dear toย me. Iย was young, and some guy responded toย myย offer via email, telling meย heย was interested but was onย aย business trip. Heย said itย would beย nice ofย meย toย send itย toย some place inย Africa, and assured meย heโd pay for any extra costs.
Not only did heย never pay meย for anything, butย I also ended upย paying aย hundred dollars for the shipping. Lesson learned, but Iโm still sad toย this day whenย I think aboutย it.
Story 10:ย Myย boyfriend planned aย romantic weekend atย aย luxury hotel. Everything felt perfectโuntil checkout. His card got declined, and heย turned red with embarrassment. Iย smiled and paid for our stay.
Asย weย were leaving, the receptionist discreetly pulled meย aside and said, โBeย careful, Iโve seen this guy doย the same thing with other women. Heย comes here, his card gets declined, and they end upย paying for everything. Youโre being scammed!โ
Iย chose not toย believe her. Weย were still early inย our relationship, andย I trusted him completelyโI had noย reason notย to. But over time, heย started pulling similar tricks more often. Iย noticed heย was making meย pay for shopping trips and other expenses. The final straw came when heย tried toย steal myย money byย pressuring meย toย invest inย aย shady scheme.
Iย broke upย with him. Yet the memory ofย that hotel stay still haunts meย because itย was the beginning ofย itย all, andย I wishย I had listened toย that girl.
