On February 26, 2025, the esteemed actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home. A maintenance worker, concerned after not hearing from the couple for approximately two weeks, discovered their bodies and alerted authorities.

One of their three dogs, a German Shepherd, was also found dead, while the other two dogs survived.

Initial investigations revealed no signs of foul play or external trauma. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating they had been deceased for several days, possibly up to two weeks. Data from Hackman’s pacemaker suggested he likely died around February 17.

While initial tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a gas leak or other environmental factors. Toxicology reports are pending to determine the exact cause of death.

Gene Hackman was a celebrated actor, renowned for his roles in films such as “The French Connection,” “Unforgiven,” and as Lex Luthor in the original “Superman” series. He received two Academy Awards and four Golden Globe Awards during his illustrious career. Hackman retired from acting in 2004 to focus on writing.

He is survived by his three children from his first marriage to Faye Maltese.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa is ongoing. Authorities are awaiting the results of comprehensive autopsies and toxicology tests to provide further insights.
