On October 1, news broke of John Amos’ passing, shocking many—including his daughter, Shannon Amos, who learned about it from the media.

“I am without words… Our family received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she shared on Instagram, expressing her devastation and confusion over finding out 45 days later.

John’s son, Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed the news, calling his father “a man with the kindest heart” who was loved worldwide. “Many fans consider him their TV father,” he said.

Shannon shared a video of her and her father dancing to Luther Vandross’ Dance with My Father, writing that while they are struggling, she finds peace in knowing he is finally free.

Their family had faced previous tensions. Last year, Shannon accused her brother of neglecting their father’s care, alleging elder abuse and financial exploitation. John denied these claims, stating he was never in the ICU or fighting for his life. He even requested GoFundMe refund all donations from a campaign his daughter had created on his behalf.
