When my boyfriend Matt offered to pay our entire rent, I felt like I was living in a dream. His words, “Let me take care of you,” felt comforting, especially since my non-profit job didn’t pay much. Moving in together seemed like the right next step, and his offer gave me a sense of relief.

However, once we settled into our new apartment, Matt’s attitude began to change. He started expecting me to cook, clean, and do everything around the house. When I questioned him, he simply said, “I’m paying the rent, so I make the rules.” That was when I realized his so-called generosity was really about control, not care.

Feeling lost, I called Matt’s father, Mr. Reynolds, a man I respected for his honesty. When he visited and saw what was happening, he was upset. To make a point, he handed Matt a dollar and said, “Dance for me,” showing how wrong it is to treat someone like a possession.

That moment gave me the courage to leave. I moved out that night. Now, living in my own small studio, I’ve learned that love shouldn’t come with strings. I’d rather be independent and free than live under someone else’s control.
